A unique 1,000 year old renovated castle which is currently running as a thriving tourism and wine producing/selling business. An amazing character property in a fabulous spot with huge potential for banquets, weddings, seminars and functions.
The Chateau was built around 990 to be the military and administrative headquarters of the Vallespir county, which in the 11th Century fell under the ownership of a Vicomte with whom it stayed for 10 generations until 1321. In 1876 the Chateau was restored and made habitable by Ernest de Satge it was then subject to a further restoration endeavour some 15 years ago since when it has been managed as a museum, restaurant and banqueting business with approximately 40,000 visitors per annum.
To now turn it into a very special private house would be, by contrast, a relatively easy task and one that would create a marvellous, unique home - either incorporating the public museum space or making it completely private. Included in the sale but not attached to the castle are 12 hectares of agricultural land, nine of which is planted with vines that produce the wine sold at the chateau.
Set in two hectares of gardens, the Chateau currently has around 400m2 of developed space in 10 main rooms arranged around a central courtyard and an interior garden recently exploited as a gastronomic restaurant. The gardens coil around the property and feature indigenous Mediterranean plants - there is space and a choice of locations to install a swimming pool. The Chateau dominates the village below which in the 13th Century was surrounded by a fortified wall and towers. It is famous for its aesthetic charm and has been nominated one of the top 100 prettiest villages in France. It is isolated but not remote, being situated just 5 minutes from the market town of Thuir and 20 minutes from Perpignan; the views are far reaching across rolling hills, the Roussillon Plain and to the Mediterranean Sea.
