Property For Sale Avignon

AvignonOn the banks of the Rhone river in rural southern France, Avignon is surprisingly alive with activity.

It has a mild Mediterranean climate.

Sundry statues dot the countryside as well as the town square.  Many beautiful paintings and frescoes can be seen both on and inside the buildings and religious monuments.

The countryside is largely cultivated, with lush farms and enormous, well-maintained parks.

Avignon is a fantastic vacation spot for those who would like to get a taste of the European countryside.  It is notable for its extraordinarily low costs.  You can vacation in Avignon for only a small fraction of the cost of visiting other locations in France.

Some hotels cost less than €30  per night–with free meals.  But if you want luxurious quarters during your visit, you can also stay at one of the local hotels such as five-star Hotel d’Europe.

Not everything in Avignon is inexpensive; some of the local shops have extraordinarily high prices.  Check around for the ones frequented by locals if you want to find the best deals.

Avignon has long been an important center of communication and transportation.  The Catholic church used it as a headquarters during medieval times, and not far from the city you can see the remains of a Roman forum.

In modern days it is a major transportation nexus for train lines running through Provence, and it hosts a variety of international events.

Much of the town was constructed during the Renaissance.  Avignon is home to many local vineyards and offers a wide selection of local wines.

Mein Wein / My WineWine tasting is available at both the traditional restaurants and those that cater to tourists who prefer to partake in a variety of international cuisines.

The Rhone wines are particularly popular among both locals and those traveling from elsewhere.

The TGV line runs straight through Avignon, so you will be able to take a lightning-fast train straight to Paris and many other locations in France.  Many other trains and lines run through Avignon as well; the Eurostar can take you from Avignon to London in as little as six hours every Saturday.

Nearby you can see Roman ruins, quality campsites, and manicured trails.  Many prominent international events are hosted in Avignon.  A summer theater festival has been held annually in Avignon for the past six decades.

It’s a great place to meet to have a look at all of Provence.

Some of the local sites include: the Palace of Popes and the ruined Le Pont Saint-Benezet, a bridge that according to legend, was inspired by angels.  Unfortunately, that bridge is prone to flooding, but the chapel of its saint still stands nearby.

When you check out the markets in Avignon, keep in mind that some of the larger ones have much higher prices than some of the smaller ones more commonly frequented by the locals.

Wikitravel suggests checking out the Place Pie, which operates every day from 6:00 to 1:00.  While it is possible to vacation very inexpensively in Avignon, some local markets are extraordinarily high-priced, especially during peak tourist season.
